Fishing

The Gunnison River through the Black Canyon and Gunnison Gorge is designated Gold Medal water, with up to 10000 trout over six inches per river mile. You will pull rainbow and brown trout from 12 to 20 inches regularly, with occasional fish over 24 inches if you know what you are doing. The June stonefly hatch is legendary, turning the river into a feeding frenzy, but fishing holds year round with the best action from June through September when multiple hatches overlap. Access requires hiking or floating, as this 14 mile section through the gorge does not have road access.
